Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I’d be surprised if any of us doesn’t personally know someone who has had breast cancer.  I’d also be surprised if you’ve never heard of the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure.  As runners, it’s a great opportunity for us to help others and help ourselves.  What the Komen foundation has accomplished is an amazing testament to a sister’s love.  If you’ve never run the Race for the Cure, please consider doing it this year.  If you can’t run, volunteer.  You will see first hand how breast cancer touches so many people.  You will see tributes on many runners’ shirts and you will be inspired by the survivors who run.  You can also donate directly to the foundation or buy some of their cool pink stuff.  Sorry, I’m a sucker for pink!

Running the race is also good for you.  Here’s an interesting article about a study showing that regular exercise reduces the risk of postmenopausal women’s chances of getting breast cancer.  And at the very least it’s a good reminder for those of us who are healthy how lucky we are.

My friend Joanna has an amazing friend, Heather, who is a 4 time cancer survivor, she’s an athlete and a mom and worthy of the ten minutes in your day it takes to watch her story.

Go out and log a few miles for yourself, for Heather, and for some woman you don’t even know whose life might be saved because you ran a race.

  1. You are so right, Suzanne! This IS a great race whether you walk, run, cheer, or volunteer.

Giving a few hours of time can save a life. I can’t think of a better investment.

If you would like to donate to Race for the Cause and would like to attach your donation to a “name” feel free to use mine, Heather Ray. I have raised 32k so far and would like to increase that amount by the end of October. Race for the Cure Cincinnati, under Support Heather Ray. (our race has come and gone…my team came in 3rd, $800 shy of being #1. But, as an individual, I know I can stand proud and say…32k!! First place in fund raising in Cincinnati! Why do I fund rasie under my name—to show my two little girls (age 4 and 5) that mommy will find a CURE so they don’t need to worry.!! (Joann, my direct link is located on my facebook for you to share with everyone!)
