Create a FLEX-Schedule…and Stick To It! 

Yes, there is such thing as creating a “flexible schedule”. Honestly, I found it to be the perfect balance between setting time for specific things,(ESPECIALLY those thing I constantly procrastinate with),and having flexibility left in my day so that I’m not “booked” every minute.

If you create a “flex schedule” that looks appealing and doable, it will WORK. Overbook and over schedule it-well you’ll watch that puppy fly right out of that window like last January’s workout routine.

A QUICK Tip we L-O-V-E: THE 15 MINUTE RULE:

If organization has gotten you down every morning–try blocking out 15 minutes every night where you get one or two things done in preparation for the next day! 

Here’s ONE of th best parts about this time saving hack: set the timer and the WHOLE family can participate! Give each child a “job” in preparation for the next day! 

  • Prep lunches
  • Get school clothes 
  • Grab all papers for school
  • Figure out what breakfast will look like the next morning

The great part about these 15 minutes, is that EVERYONE has their hand in preparing for the next day.

This alleviates some of the “rushing around” in the morning as well as that overwhelming sense that you’re doing EVERYTHING! 

Try Using/Creating your Own Planner!

Many of us love to write things down-afterall, reasearch has shown that writing information, as a opposed to simply trying to remember or even typing it, offers a much more powerful connection toward remembering and doing!

Some people swear by planners, others love a white board or chalkboard, and still, others love a simple calendar hanging up in a noticeable spot complete with sections to write in. 

Whatever is comfortable for you–you can make it  into your own planner!

Simplify Sports & All Extracurricular Activities! 

Here’s a concept that many of us need to remember: LESS = MORE! The over-scheduled kiddo equals the over-stressed parent which, you guessed it, equals less together time.

Don’t get me wrong here-I’m super big into extracurricular activities & sports…just not three or four per week.

AND, mamas, let’s be real–if you have more than one kiddo at home…you’ll drive yourself and your family nutty driving around five nights or more out of your week.

Simplify so you can “family-ify” your time. Time together is priceless…and believe me, the “kid” years go by way to fast.

Less is MORE!

Here’s an awesomely quick & fun idea to gain control of the out-of-control sports/activities: 

Sit with your children and make a list of fall activities they enjoy. Soccer on the list? Brownies or Girl Scouts? How about Gymnastics?

Write each activity down on a slip of paper and have the kiddos organize them in order of importance.

Then have your kiddos create a “top five” then a “top three” and, eventually, have them choose one or two!

Simplify Friends: Don’t Follow the Crowd!

Ok—yes, it’s super fun to have your kids doing activities with your friend’s children—ESPECIALLY if you’re BFFs with the parents as well.

HOWEVER- and we know this is tough—don’t fall into the trap of following others into sports.

You’ll end up over-scheduled and packed before you blink.

SIMPLE STEP: Set YOUR schedule for YOUR kiddos.

There will be plenty of opportunity for everyone to get together during the school year if your kids happen to do different activities this fall.

Simplify-Dinners!

Try making a casserole or two on the weekend so that there’s at least two evenings during the chaos of the week that you can throw the food in the oven and actually play a game of ball outside with the kids or chat about their day (uninterrupted or without household distractions). 

 

While we’re on the subject of food….

Simplify your Grocery Trips!— So I DREADED grabbing my daughter from school and driving immediately to the grocery store. NO ONE (including me) wanted to head off to the grocery store after being apart for most of the day.

 I dreaded this activity so much, in fact, that I would make up dinners like “breakfast dinner” just to get us by.

Eventually I came up with a “grocery morning” on the weekend to cover us for the week. (or if I really didn’t have my —- together, it would be a late night 10 p.m. trip with my favorite third shift grocery crew–but still on a weekend!).

If finances don’t allow for a one time weekly trip, you can certainly split your trip into two days (one weekend and one week night that won’t send you over the edge)…whatever works but make it work for YOU.

Simplify-Tech Free Nights!

This can be a toughie but it’s totally doable and needed!

Shorter daylight and busier day schedules often call for some veg-out R & R in front of the TV, tablets or phones. HOWEVER, it’s super important to commit to balancing out the technology time.

Below is a fun way to make “tech-free day” an exciting day with a grab bag list of ideas! Here’s how you can do it:

  1. At the beginning of the week, have everyone put an idea in a hat for their tech-free day.
  2. Change up who chooses out of the hat-and every time you have a tech free day, you do that activity. The excitement may make everyone ask for a tech free day-almost every day!

Don’t be pressured into thinking that just because you have time home with your family that you’re doing something wrong. I know I do NOT want to be in the position of many of my friends who are eating more take out than they are at home with their families.

There’s a fine line between encouraging sports activities and losing your family (and your sanity) during the school year.

Every family’s needs are different. Don’t compare your family to your friend’s or other family members. Remember-your needs, and the needs of YOUR family, must come first!

Happy June everyone! I almost didn’t believe it was June until my kiddos, excited to flip the page on the calendar, reminded me. Wow-time flies…which brings us to this next post! Being home with the kiddos is a HUGE blessing that I am ever-so thankful for each day. With it, though, I’ve found that being productive has taken a major back seat. I am now a HUGE culprit of letting hours and days slip by without so much as cracking a look at anything on my foreboding to-do list. I mean, even with the best schedule, we get caught up in learning, play and LIFE that often by 7:30  I look back and feel a little like….

Even as we speak, I’m gingerly typing away on my keyboard, my littlest love sprawled across my lap on our couch in sound slumber. My time is limited, this I know, so I type fast, ignoring typos and incomplete sentences that I will have to tend to “later” (at o-dark-thirty). Sound kind of  familiar?

If you’re like me, you love,  LOVE, LOVE spending time with your littles. I mean, how awesome is it to get up each sunny morning and sit on the floor with your kiddos to play with trucks, Legos or construct a marble run? Pretty amazing I say. HOWEVER, if you’re also like me,there’s the insatious “to do list” looming some where in your cerebellum begging for you to tend to one of the five hundred items you’ve been unable to tackle.There are days were I have felt completely unproductive and the result: a VERY cranky mommy.

Most of us anxiously await that precious time of day that may allow you to ACTUALLY get one or (dare I say) two things done….it’s none other than-NAP TIME. Ah yes, that sacred time of day that no one but a parent could POSSIBLY understand. It allows your littles to dream away those pre-nap time crankies all while simultaneously allowing you to hack away at that list which keeps knocking on the door unanswered. With so much to do, how can you become more productive each day?

Balancing Act 101–writing with one hand!

 

My, Oh My How Time Does Fly…

Sitting here again today, it occurred to me that I’m probably not the only one who has ever wondered “WHAT DID I DO during that nap time?” Did I actually get anything done? I mean…aside from tiptoeing around picking up wooden blocks and trains? Say no more, sista -or brother–we FEEL you. How are those precious minutes,(or for some of you lucky ducks, HOURS), flying away without a hint of anything being done? I began to get so frustrated with myself that I actually started researching topics related to work-life balance. Especially those related to working at home with LITTLE ones…which, is a WHOLE other ball game. After contemplating the many layers of advice out there on the web, I finally discovered one thing that has actually WORKED for me: BLOCK SCHEDULING.

Block Scheduling 101

What is block scheduling and how can you implement it? Block scheduling, in it’s simplest form, is taking a birds eye view of your day and “blocking” out time frames for each goal that you have. There’s a specific start and stop time for each activity you’ve have lined up.  That means if your little love naps from 11:00 until 12:00 each day, you have the opportunity to create blocks of time for yourself within that hour! For example you could take that whole hour for one activity or by break it down into smaller increments to check off multiple things on your list!

Even though I’m a guinea pig when it comes to block scheduling as I’ve LITERALLY just started it….like yesterday…I’ve discovered a few things in my experimentation with block scheduling already. After initiating block scheduling the other day, (at least during one portion of my day), three amazing things happened:
a. I cleared that nagging list off my brain and on to paper.
b. I was able to achieve ONE item off of my list…don’t judge-all about baby steps here.
c. I felt relieved, energized and ready for the next adventure with my little one.

Simply print, write  and post it! Take each item you feel you want to do FOR that DAY or THOSE hours and get them down on paper!

Not everyone loves Google or uses it the way I do. Totally get it. One of my favorite blog sites, The Work at Home Woman, suggests using an App such as Toggl!. This is an amazing time-blocking app that features a timer, as well as additional tools to help you concentrate and apply the block schedule method. You can use the app with other planning tools or simply on it’s own. REMEMBER,  Use the app in conjunction with your other planning tools or on its own

Jumping into the Block Scheduling Routine!

To start kicking some major get-it-done goals on your to-do lists, Holly from The Work at Home Woman offers amazing  advice for pumping your way toward feeling more successful each day. Below are a couple of pointers: 

  1. PRIORITZE your Goals:  Start off each day by tackling the hardest item on you to-do list. REMEMBER this is about YOU; not what anyone else may deem as “difficult” or “grandiose”. For me, it’s searching for ways to increase my family’s income so we can vacation!
  2. PICK a System: Start by getting a system in place you like and WILL use. REMEMBER this is not A ONE-SIZE FITS ALL routine. Block scheduling follows a certain pattern for sure, but HOW you implement it is all up to you! 
  3. SCHEDULE Tasks at the Same Time EVERY DAY: We know this can get tricky; especially if you’re a stay at home mom balancing home life  and work. However, according to a post by conversionminded ,if you create time slots for the same types of things everyday, the more likely you will be to get into a routine with them, the more likely they will get done! 
  4. Do YOU time: Office time, housework and playdate time may very well be a large part of your day. However,  when it comes to block scheduling,  don’t forget that you need YOU time too. Whether you have an hour or a full eight to get your tasks done, schedule yourself breaks! In general, you’ll find some sanity and you’ll be more productive!  Put in that much needed walk/run or some other downtime for you to rejuvenate. 

Bottom line…

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and under achieved, take block scheduling out for a test drive! Worse case scenario, you lost an hour trying something new and, you’re one step close to figuring out what works!  I’m already feeling a little more in control and balanced… I’m now  tackling my New Year’s to do lists!  Whoooo HOOOOO!

REAL organizing on a budget!


Holidays have well been over and all of your festive decorations, may or may not  be fully put away (I STILL have some lights on a random bush outside). However, your organizing train has come to a full on hault due to one realization-your toy collection has grown and, unfortunately, your home has not. Tired of stepping on trains, legos, cars, dolls, and, well, everything BUT your kitchen floor? Think you need a good amount of moo-lah to organize your kids stuff? Think again! Below, we outline one of the easiest, budget friendly, kid friendly ways to organize all of those little toys that puncture your feet, eat up space and, otherwise, MIGHT make you slightly insane on a daily basis.

Organize it ALL-BUT FIRST A QUICK SIDE NOTE:

As you may or may not know, I started a “organize, don’t fear the New Year”  post right on New Year’s Day. If you’ve also been following me, you’ve also noticed  that almost two months have past and that subject has seem to gone to the crickets. No worries, unlike most gym memberships,I haven’t forgotten that resolution (I recently read that 80-90% of resolutions are lost in February…hmmm). Either way, in this organizing endeavor, I managed to leak my organizing ambitions down the stairs in an effort to straighten out the great toy catastrophe throughout my home.

Organization Inspiration-FOUND!

We visit our local library anywhere between two to three times a week and  I’m always so impressed with the colorful layout, carefully marked bins and the overall organized “feel” of the environment inside of their children’t room. I was so inspired by this organization (and why shouldn’t it be…they have like 12 staff members to manage it and label it everyday) that I decided to duplicate it in our very own home!  In thinking about how this might look in our home, I took a step back at what made this children’s room space so successful and I determine that the space had:

  1. The toys were categorized-Legos, Cars, Maker Space etc, were kept together.
  2. Labels were on EVERYTHING.
  3. The categorized toys had a space to be placed after play.

From there, I came up with three “must-haves”  to reclaim our own home-space:

  • Must be visible for the kids to access.
  • Must have labels for our kids to recognize and organize.
  • Needs to have it’s own space away from our living area.

After assessing what I liked about this space and figured out what we needed so that a small portion of my sanity could return.. I moved on.

Oh-but there was STILL one issue…my wallet was a little light. EEEK.

On a Budget? You Can STILL Organize!

So being the determined mama/parent that I’m certain most of you are, I wasn’t going to let a “little” thing like money get in the way of regaining my home after the holiday toy rush. So, I started looking around my home for ideas-ways to get around spending more than, let’s say 30 bucks. Low and behold, I found baskets and from there, I developed our very own labeling and categorizing system so amazing, that our kids wanted in on the fun! Get this…I was so low on cash that I couldn’t even grab ink for our printer. No ink? NO PROBLEM? Does everything “Martha Stewart” or Pinterest worthy have to be printed? Well, I say thee “nay”!

What you need: (FYI–it’s NOT mind blowing-you have all or most of these!) (affiliate links below)

 

  • Markers–really–you know you have at LEAST three colors laying around somewhere midst the mess.
  • Baskets, old shoe boxes, anything to store the STUFF in. Remember-it’s not about  of Parents Magazine…it should be neat. FOR YOU.
  • Tape or Velcro
  • Sheet Protectors….ok…this is one you MAY NOT have laying around your house–BUT to be fair–you could go online here or to any local big box store and spend…MAYBE 10 BUCKS to grab them. Worth it so you won’t have to relabel.

 

Organizing is so fun with everyone!

We started by organizing each category of toy into large piles: Matchbox cars here, Legos there, trains over there. Then we started creating labels for each basket. I WILL tell you, I need to get MORE of those baskets! I DO love them and, with a coupon, they are about $5.00-6.00 each. You can find them at Michael’s Craft store or really any craft store. I recommend checking locally so you can avoid any possible additional cost.

BONUS: We made the labels a learning tool as well for our littlest reader in-training…adding the uppercase and lowercase letters to each label).

 

 

Pin-worthy Budget Friendly Organizing!

Overall, super excited and they are adorable. These baskets fit nicely in a larger cubby or right under a table (we slide ours right under the train table after the kiddos are done playing!)
